Test for Success: A/B Testing Fomo to Boost Conversions

Fomo is a powerful conversion rate booster right from the start, out of the box, but experimenting with template messages and display settings can make a significant difference! By testing different notification copy, themes, timing and animations you'll see what really engages visitors and boosts revenue.

Let’s walk through what to test, which metrics to track, and exactly how to set it up—no guesswork required.

🔬 What to Test in Fomo (Ideas & Experiments)

Start with small changes and iterate. Here are some of the most impactful settings to A/B test:

  1. Notification Type

Test: “Recent Sales” vs. “Reviews” vs. “Roundups”

Why: Different types create different psychological triggers (urgency, popularity, etc.)

  2. Position on Page

Test: Bottom left vs. Top right vs. center

How: Adjust Fomo display settings in your dashboard (Settings > Display)

  3. Frequency and Delay

Test: Show every 5 seconds vs. every 15 seconds. Or, Default Time Between vs. Random Time between. Or, 5 notifications per page vs. only two per page. (Settings > Timing) Goal: Discover the balance between frequency and scarcity.

  4. Template Copy: Include a call to action or add Variables such as Color & Size of item purchased.

    Test:

“James from NY just purchased X”

    vs.

“🚀 James from NY bought X recently—what are you waiting for?!” Tip: Use Filters or Different Themes to update your style. (For more about Filters, click here.)

  5. Use Page Rules to only display Fomo on Certain Pages

Test: Only on product pages vs. homepage + cart

How: Use Page Rules or Flows to control where notifications appear

👥 Multi-Site Testing (Business Plan or Higher)

If you’re on the Business plan or above, Fomo allows you to create multiple Sites—each with its own embed snippet and custom settings. Here’s how:

  • In your Fomo dashboard, click the orange circle in the bottom-left corner.
  • A tab will appear—select Sites.
  • From the Sites screen, click Add Site.
  • Configure the new Site with the specific Fomo settings you want to test (e.g., different notification type or position).
  • In your A/B testing tool, assign traffic segments to each version using the corresponding Fomo embed snippets.

🔒 Multi-site testing is only available for Business plans or higher. If you're on a Starter plan, test variations manually by changing settings week over week.

📈 Once changes are applied, you can track the impact by reviewing the breakdown inside your Fomo dashboard. Need a deeper dive into performance? ping us at hello@fomo.com and we’re happy to provide detailed stats tailored to your setup.

🧠 Bonus Tip: Keep It Clean

For accurate results, test one variable at a time. For example, don’t change the content and the frequency in the same week. Isolate variables to learn what truly moves the needle.

And if you're just getting started and want to understand Fomo’s overall impact, you can run a “Fomo vs. no Fomo” test by excluding the snippet entirely from one variant. But for ongoing users already tracking conversions, we recommend focusing on optimizing the experience—not removing it.

📊 Example Testing Plan

Week Variant Fomo Setting Key Results
1 A

Desktop Position: bottom left

Timing:

3 seconds on page, 10 seconds between.

CR = 2.5%, Time on site +12%
2 B

Desktop Position: bottom right

Timing:

5 seconds on page, random time between.

CR = 2.3%, Bounce rate -8%

With tools like Flows, Themes, Inline Notifications, and Page Rules, Fomo gives you everything you need to make your social proof strategy truly your own.

📓 Need a Hand Tracking Your Progress?

To make your optimization journey even smoother, we’ve built a custom Google Sheet pre-filled with Fomo's default settings you can use to track your customizations over time. Sheet 1 can be used to track display settings and sheet 2 can track changes to a specific template. TIP: Use an AI tool to write three or four versions of your template to test over time. Duplicate sheet 2 to test additional template changes. Use the tracker to stay organized and uncover trends that might not be obvious in day-to-day analytics.
