Preview Fomo Notifications in the Shopify Theme Editor👀

Want to see exactly how a notification will look on your store before it goes live? You can now preview any Fomo notification directly inside the Shopify theme editor no need to wait for real visitor activity, and nothing you do in preview is ever shown to your actual store visitors.(Available on all plans.)


How it works⚙️

  1. Open your Shopify admin and go to Online Store > Themes, then click Customize on the theme you want to preview on.


  2. Navigate to any page in the editor, product, collection, cart, or home page all work.


  3. Look for the Fomo Preview panel in the bottom-right corner of the storefront preview.


  4. Use the dropdown in the panel to select any notification you've configured in your Fomo dashboard.


  5. Your notification will render immediately, in its real template and position, so you can check exactly how it will appear to shoppers.


That's it, no publishing, no waiting for live events, and no need to trigger real store activity just to check how a notification looks.

The Orange Edit button,

After selecting one of your notifications you can click the orange Edit button to go directly to that notification editor where you can modify the message, the image, manage translations and more.

💡A few things worth knowing:

  • Preview mode bypasses your display rules, frequency caps, and event data requirements, so the notification you select always renders right away even if it wouldn't normally show yet on a live storefront.


  • The panel is labeled "Preview mode not visible to real visitors" as a reminder that what you're seeing is only visible to you, inside the editor.


  • The preview panel only appears when you're accessing your store through the Shopify theme editor. Your actual visitors will never see it, and interacting with a previewed notification doesn't count as a real event in your analytics.

If you don't have any notifications set up yet

If you open the preview panel before creating a notification, it will let you know there's nothing to preview yet and point you to your Fomo dashboard to set one up. Once you've created a notification there, refresh the editor and it'll show up in the dropdown.

If the panel overlaps your notification

Some notification positions (for example, bottom-right) can end up in the same corner as the preview panel itself. When that happens, the panel automatically repositions so you can see both the panel and the notification clearly.

What preview mode doesn't cover🚧

  • Inline notifications — this release covers pop-up style notifications only. Preview for inline notifications is being considered separately.


  • Sequences of notifications — preview shows one notification at a time. Previewing a full sequence with timing between notifications isn't supported yet.


  • Mobile vs. desktop views — to check how a notification looks on mobile, use Shopify's built-in device toggle in the theme editor; Fomo's preview panel will follow whichever view you're in.


  • Other platforms — this feature is specific to the Shopify theme editor's designer context. WooCommerce, BigCommerce, and other platforms don't have an equivalent editor mode, so preview isn't available there yet.

FAQ

Does preview mode cost extra? No. Preview is included on every paid plan, it's not a premium feature.

Will my visitors ever see the preview panel or my test selections? No. The panel only renders when the page is loaded inside the Shopify theme editor's designer context. It won't appear on your published, live storefront.

Does previewing a notification affect my analytics? No. Actions taken in preview mode aren't recorded as live events, so your notification stats stay accurate.
